I just found you and didn't read every word of each comment, but the 'pear-shaped' thing is for rug hooking. There should be a sharp needle looking thing with a hole in it at the narrow end of the pear (couldn't tell for sure in pix.) I had one similar but not quite as large as that one appears. Where the two pieces of wood meet in the middle should slide back and forth which is the depth of the wool (or yarn or rags - whatever they were using.) Hope that helps.
